Adahas, the first sibling

2005.05.26

Friend, fellow Vesessin, hacker and über geek Venushka finally got to launch his website Adahas. Already he has a few things that you might find very useful: navigo, a Wordpress plugin for creating flexible navigation menus; intouch, an Ajax enabled customisable contact form for Wordpress; mymime, another WP plugin which allows you to serve content in various MIME types (this site uses it to serve content as application/xhtml+xml); phpMyAdahas, a survey management tool. As can be expected, all this neat stuff is released under GPL.

“Adahas” is the Sinhala word for ideas. At Vesess we have a special affection for Sinhala domain names. It all started during the time we were trying to come up with a name for our company, and the availability of .com was of high priority. In addition, it had to be short, and “Sri Lankan”. After weeks of hunting, Vesess dawned on me while travelling by bus to a funeral at our village, that beautiful haven which never ceases to inspire me.

It was only natural that while looking for a suitable name for a survey we planned on conducting Venu stumbled on adahas. Since it wasn’t straightforward enough for the non-Sri Lankan audience we went for a different name, but the domain was too precious to be left alone. When Venu got adahas, I, who was looking for a domain name that had “freedom” in it, went for nidahas. So, in a way, this site is adahas’s sibling.

And in more than one way, Venu is an inspiration to all of us at Vesess. This guy eats PHP, drinks Java, breathes SQL and shits Web. He played around with CSS for a while and came up with a WP template for his site in no time. That’s not surprising to us who’ve got used to his lightning fast turnaround times; for example, he learnt PHP overnight and created the survey we did for the General Election in 2004 in a couple of hours. When he says “nothing is impossible”, you know he’s right.

People, Watch out for this guy. He’s destined to go places.
