A Fallen Hero
2005.08.13
Sri Lanka has had more than her fair share of seperatists, terrorists and war. We’re home to arguably the most vile and dangerous terrorist group of all, LTTE. We’ve lost many elected leaders, including a president, in brutal assassinations. Tens of thousands of people have died in suicide bombings. We’ve had a ceasefire between the government and the LTTE for two years, which the terrorists have interpreted as an invitation for a killing spree. Many civillians, Tamil leaders who had different opinions, intelligence officers of the Army, and recently, the Inspector of Police in Jaffna, lost their lives during the past few months.
Yesterday night, they murdered Lakshman Kadirgamar.
They silenced the most eloquent voice of Sri Lanka that fearlessly spoke against terrorism. We lost the best diplomat of our times, an intellectual who could have led Sri Lanka towards a better future. In the cesspool that is Sri Lankan politics, he was a lonely exception, a man who was far above those who were around him.
Kadirgamar was a hero of our times. May he rest in peace.
