Jeffrey Veen at WE05 on Web 2.0

Jeffrey Veen’s excellent workshop on “Designing the Next Generation of Web Apps” at WE05 ended a couple of hours ago at the University of Technology, Sydney. Though the plan was to live blog the event, WiFi was not available at the venue, probably should be because of Jeff’s recent expressions on WiFi at events such as this.

I arrived at 8.00 in the morning at Sydney airport, after a 9 hour flight from Tokyo and was just in time at the venue. And certainly the workshop was a much needed and timely one which gave an insight to most of the aspects of web 2.0.

Throughout the workshop, Jeff walked through various areas in developing for the future, using his experience in Blogger redesign and Flickr, which included:

• Understanding user behaviors
• Interaction design
• Documenting Web 2.0
• Designing with APIs
• Practical usability testing
• Openness of Web 2.0

Though this whole idea is reshaping the web and its usage while opening a whole new stage for creativity to be explored, still there are many accessibility issues to be addressed. And apart from that an interesting fact highlighted was the openness of data in Web 2.0 which involves a new way of approaching the web and necessity to re-think the standard corporate approach to data and web content.

Overall it was an eye-opener, though many programmers in the crowd might have expected　 more specific details and guides in implementing AJAX driven applications. Nevertheless there’s tomorrow’s AJAX session, by Tim Lucas which would definitely cover that.
