Rebooted

I’ve embraced earthy hues with this version of Nidahas, the first redesign of the site after the initial version that got me vaulted (realigned later), and helped me make friends with some very smart people. I loved the Sri Lankanness of that design, but was never really happy with the n00b markup or the occasional lack of attention to important details. Although I’m no Tantek, the markup and source order of this theme is definitely something I’m quite satisfied with.

Jonathan reboots early

The man in green, Jonathan Snook, has rebooted early. The site retains his trademark green and grey colour combination, and the wicked dockable comments. I love the simple yet nifty features he has added in to offer some discoverability in the site and to let others have fun with it.

Pricing a Project

The talented folk at Blue Flavor have detailed their pricing methodology. It’s an insightful article that’s a must read for any web designer.

Bite Size Standards

It was the Sinhala New Year week, and we had a loss in the family, so I was living under a rock. Just came online after spending a few days at our village, and the first thing I check is Bite Size Standards: it’s gone live on the 14th!

Street Artists

Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha is the avenue of Art in Colombo. The Public Library, Viharamahadevi Park, National Art Gallery, John De Silva Theatre and the National Theatre (still under construction) is on this short, shaded, beautiful road. On weekends, it is also the gallery for Colombo’s street artists.

Function Drives Form - Nielsen

Designers seem to hate Jakob Nielsen, but there’s no doubt that this guru knows his stuff. Came across this DevSource interview where he discusses everything from the proper attitude for programmers (why being smart might be bad for your code), to the importance of prototyping in design, to the reasons why PDF, Flash and local search engines can hurt more than they help.

Getting Real about Getting Real

37Signals released their book Getting Real as a PDF. I’m sure the book is excellent, but I can’t say the same about the terms and conditions under which it is released. If it were a printed book, I would have been free to share it with my friends, but if I buy this PDF, I have to agree that it’ll reside only on my computer, only to be seen by me. 37Signals are not the first to use this PDF distribution model, but it’s the first book where I really felt the hurt; it’s one book I’d love to have, if not for the need to compromise my freedom and agree to be an asshole by not sharing it with others.

Web D, cooler than Web Design

Web design has always been a bit less prestigious, less glamourous, and not quite tangible enough compared to Graphic design. Ours is a cheap medium, with very low barriers of entry (perhaps without which some people, like yours sincerely, wouldn’t be able to do it after all). It even shows in the resolution: 72dpi on screen vs. 300dpi on glossy art paper. Hell, after so much overuse even the very title “Web Designer” sounds cheap.
